Obstetrics & Gynaecology
This department offers a wide range of reproductive health services and training for residents.
VISION: To minimize maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality by providing optimal reproductive health services to the people of Taraba State and its environs.
MISSION: To deliver efficient and qualitative health care services to the people of Taraba State by promoting the health and well-being of women.
Services Rendered:
- Maternity Services: Antenatal care, Deliveries, and Postnatal care.
- Infant and Child Welfare Services.
- Gynaecological services.
- Family planning services.
Maternity Services: This service focuses on care during pregnancy, labour, and puerperium to ensure the optimal health of both mother and foetus through early recognition and treatment of pregnancy complications.
Booking Clinic: All pregnant women requiring antenatal care must register at the booking clinic, which is held on Fridays.
Antenatal Clinics: These clinics run weekly on Tuesdays (Team B) and Wednesdays (Team A). Patients are seen from 8:00 AM at the Specialist Clinic. Midwives conduct initial assessments, including vital sign checks, screening tests, and health talks covering topics such as good health maintenance, nutrition, clothing, family planning, child care, and immunization. Patients are subsequently seen by doctors for physical examinations and appropriate care. Emergency antenatal cases are handled in the Gynae Emergency unit of the hospital.
Lying-in ward: This ward provides in-patient care during pregnancy, including admissions for elective Caesarean sections. All booked patients are expected to report to the labour ward upon experiencing labour pains. Un-booked patients with similar complaints are also attended to in the labour ward.
Postnatal Clinic: Post-natal clinics are held every Tuesday (Team B) and Wednesday (Team A). Mothers and their babies are seen six weeks after delivery, though earlier appointments are made in special circumstances.
Infant And Child Welfare Services: These clinics run concurrently with the post-natal clinics on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. They focus on immunizing babies against major childhood diseases, providing vaccines such as BCG, Oral polio, Hepatitis B, Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis.
Gynaecological Services: This section covers general gynaecology, infertility treatments, family planning services, and screening for cervical cancer (including Pap smears). Emergency gynaecological services are available 24 hours a day via the Gynae Emergency Unit of the Hospital.
Gynaecological Clinics: These specific clinics operate weekly on Mondays (Team A) and Thursdays (Team B). They cater to new cases and provide follow-up care for existing patients. Patients are referred to these clinics from both within and outside the hospital.
Family Planning Services:
- The Family Planning clinic operates every working day.
- Patients are sourced from outside the hospital, as well as the Postnatal Clinic, Gynae Clinic, and Gynae Emergency.
- The clinic is managed by specially trained nursing staff under the supervision of doctors.
Theatre Sessions:
- Elective cases are scheduled on Monday (Team B) and Thursday (Team A) weekly.
- Emergency cases are handled as they arise.
Ultrasound Scan:
- Performed in the scanning room of the Specialist Clinic daily from Monday to Friday (except public holidays).
- Scanning services are also available in the Gynae Emergency Unit, Gynae/Antenatal/Labour, and Postnatal wards using Eagle view scanners.
Cardiotocography:
- Performed for foetal surveillance in the foetal monitoring unit of the Labour Ward.
- Continuous electronic foetal monitoring (cardiotocography) is available for patients in labour.
Departmental Schedule:
- Mondays: Theatre session (Team B), Gynae Clinic (Team A), House officers' presentation, and OSCE/Orals for residents.
- Tuesdays: Morning case reviews, Consultant ward rounds (Team A), Antenatal Clinic (Team B).
- Wednesdays: Postgraduate academic presentations, Consultant ward round (Team B), Antenatal Clinic (Team A).
- Thursdays: Theatre session (Team A), Gynae Clinic (Team B).
- Fridays: Antenatal Booking Clinic (Both Teams, on alternate weeks).
Interventions for Emergency Services and Indigent Patients: CEMONC:
- CEMONC stands for Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal (or Newborn) Care.
- It is a free specialized healthcare service.
- Designed to provide timely and lifesaving care to pregnant women and their new-borns.
- The program offers both emergency interventions and comprehensive support throughout pregnancy, delivery, and the immediate postnatal period.
- To be enrolled in CEMONC services, a pregnant woman requires a valid National Identification Number (NIN).
